The digestive process in ruminants whereby previously swallowed feed (cud) is regurgitated, re-masticated, and re-swallowed, enabling microbial fermentation of structural carbohydrates (cellulose) in the four-chambered forestomach system (rumen, reticulum, omasum, abomasum).
