    • Welcome to the Bioprocess Evolving Maths and Physics Workshop!

This workshop is a "bridging" course to make sure that we have all the basic skills in mathematics and physics which we will need to understand how living systems work.

Mathematics is the science of form. Living organisms are experts at shaping their bodies and environment in order to survive under the most amazing conditions - under a volcano or up in the atmosphere. Mathematics is a way of thinking and communicating which is interested in the shape of things in the world – whether it is the shape of leaves, the shape of change or even the shape of thinking. So we will need mathematics to understand how Life organises the shape of the world.

Physics studies the very simple, non-living processes of which living systems are composed. While we investigate these simple physical processes, we will find that they give us two things: a practical way of understanding mathematics, and also a set of tools which we will later use to understand living organisms.

Enaction is the process by which living beings adapt within an environment; enaction is the fundamental process of Life: Learning

Knowing is an active process by which we interact skilfully with our environment through interpretation and experimentation, and learning is the process by which we improve our skilfulness in doing this.

Learning is the change which takes place in your mind through using your mind!
